چکیده
This study comprises a detailed analysis of data for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorooctanoic (PFOA) over 600 wastewater treatment works effluents (WwTW) as well samples upstream downstream each discharge effluent into its receiving water. has allowed an investigation not only the effectiveness removal perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds during but also implications compliance with environmental quality standard (EQS) set PFOS under Water Framework Directive. It is shown that contain concentrations exceed annual average EQS by factor between 1.1-fold 40-fold. The corresponding factors PFOA are 2-fold 22-fold. presence high upstream, means quarter third individual found to reduce concentration fluorocarbons in river point. elevated studied suggest inputs these perfluoro aquatic environment ubiquitous therefore difficult address from simply setting permit conditions WwTW. freshwater based on several worst-case accumulation coefficients large safety factors, which, when combined, result sub ng/L EQS. Consequently, use biota derived may be more realistic measure risk. prudent, assess controls implemented last few years before considering widespread end-of-pipe treatment. • Effluent levels 1.1 40 times. Elevated exist sewage works. Up downstream. possible PFAS rivers permits.

Helsingør statement on poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs).
In this discussion paper, the transition from long-chain poly- and perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) to fluorinated alternatives is addressed. Long-chain PFASs include perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with 7 or more perfluorinated carbons, perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) with 6 or more perfluorinated carbons, and their precursors. Because long-chain PFASs have been found to b...
متن کاملOccurrence of natural and synthetic glucocorticoids in sewage treatment plants and receiving river waters.
This paper first reports the occurrence of sixglucocorticoids (prednisone, prednisolone, cortisone, cortisol, dexamethasone, and 6alpha-methylprednisolone) in sewage treatment plants (STPs) and receiving rivers by establishing a method for analyzing glucocorticoids in complex environmental waters. For the various types of aqueous matrices considered, the absolute recoveries were from 73 to 99%,...

This paper provides data on the occurrence of selected human pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine, clofibric acid, diclofenac, fenofibrate, fenoprofen, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and naproxen) including steroid hormones (17β-estradiol, 17α-ethinylestradiol, and estrone) in influents/effluents to/from the four principal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serving the city of Rome (Italy), in ...
متن کاملPerfluorinated alkyl substances in serum of the southern Chinese general population and potential impact on thyroid hormones
In this study, eight perfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) and five thyroid hormones (TSH, FT4, FT3, TGAb, and TMAb) were determined in 202 human serum samples of the general population of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan provinces in southern China. Σ8PFASs concentrations ranged from 0.85 to 24.3 ng/mL with a mean value of 4.66 ng/mL. The PFASs composition profiles of human serum samples nearly...
متن کاملAnthropometry in 5- to 9-Year-Old Greenlandic and Ukrainian Children in Relation to Prenatal Exposure to Perfluorinated Alkyl Substances
BACKGROUND In some animal studies, perfluorinated alkyl substances are suggested to induce weight gain. Human epidemiological studies investigating these associations are sparse. OBJECTIVE We examined pregnancy serum concentrations of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and the prevalence of offspring overweight (> 1 SD) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) > 0.5 at 5-9...
